Don’t travel Southeast Asia on a shoestring budget

We don’t recommend travelling Southeast Asia on a shoestring budget, particularly for people who’re coming from far away. This, of course, doesn’t apply to people who’re looking to maximize simply the time spent, but we think it takes something out of the experience when you’re pinching pennies the entire trip. It’s just not the same.

Is it possible? Certainly. In fact, we think this region is probably the best bang for your buck which is exactly why we don’t recommend trying to save on absolutely everything. Now, don’t get us wrong, we don’t mean splurge, but we mean, don’t try to spend the most time here, but to experience the most. Every 10 days that you can barely get by and extend your trip is another experience that you missed, an experience that you’re likely to remember the rest of your life.

For instance, for about USD100 you can go on a cruise along Halong Bay. It’s spectacular.

Or, you could sit in a cafe or a bar and chillin’ for a week longer. Sure, it’s great but you can do that down the street from your house.

Stay in hostels, eat cheaply, but don’t skimp on the experiences.
